What the England defeat tells us about Brexit
Here is the latest cartoon from Matt in the Daily Telegraph:
In the end it wasn’t to be. Gareth Southgate, Harry Kane and the England team did not make it to the World Cup final after losing to a superior Croatian team that demonstrated greater experience and game management.
The final will be played between Croatia (the latest country to join the EU) and France (one of the first countries to join) and the parallels with Brexit almost write themselves.
Few people would say that the government isn’t trying to deliver Brexit but the truth is that they are failing at an impossible task.
Remain lost the vote and an economically viable Brexit was always a pipe dream.
Theresa May’s third way feels very much like the tired England team who just couldn’t make it through in the late stages as the clock ticked down.
Whether it is red lines or defensive lines, both started to fall apart and in the end disappeared entirely.
The new Brexit secretary, Dominic Raab will hope to play the Jordan Pickford role and save the day but perhaps that is where the parallels end. Jordan Pickford announced himself on the world stage with gusto and will likely be England’s number 1 for the next ten years. Raab’s career will likely be much shorter and contain more own goals.
